About EH Active
The idea for EH Active comes from Charlie Bresler, who is both an avid exerciser and an avid philanthropist. EH stands for Effective Hedonism (as referenced in a Time Magazine article), which embraces the idea that people experience deep pleasure and satisfaction when they use some of their time and money to help others. Our goal is to create an international community that emphasizes exercise as a key pillar of personal wellbeing, while at the same time helping to improve the wellbeing of people living in extreme poverty.
We support our own, and each other’s, exercise using the Strava app. Strava allows participants to track a wide range of activities including walking, running, cycling, swimming and many other forms of exercise using a phone or smart watch. Through Strava, our community can see one another’s activities, offer encouragement through kudos and comments, and build motivation and accountability together as an active, connected group.
EH Active’s philanthropy goal is for participants, together with outside donors, to support a different nonprofit each month. These organisations are selected from the recommendations of The Life You Can Save, an organisation founded in 2012 by Charlie Bresler and Peter Singer, a world-renowned philosopher and author of the book The Life You Can Save. The Life You Can Save promotes nonprofits that, based on rigorous evidence-driven research, have been shown to be highly impactful and cost-effective in improving the lives of people living in poverty, particularly in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
